New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue during his campaign.

A Historic Residence

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for most New York City mayors after the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central issue, was not quick to announce this decision right away following his victory in November.

"This decision came down to the security of my family and the need to directing my complete efforts on carrying out the agenda for affordability the city's residents supported," Mamdani said on Monday.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in Astoria, Queens, an area renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and the work I do," he affirmed.

A Contentious Issue

In his election campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a place for public city functions, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Grand New Home

As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his humble Astoria digs.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Within, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished consistent with the home's historical period.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, which means the city imposes caps on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers see such units as essential protections as the price of rent exceeds the means of many residents.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
