It might not have been at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own Donald Trump moment this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life away from worry.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, provided by a local firefighter, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and based in heritage that bring people together. Every time, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and cafecito as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
