The remains of a mother aged 34 and her 10-year-old daughter have been discovered inside freezers in an apartment in western Austria.
The victims, a Syrian woman and her daughter, who had been unaccounted for for a number of months, were found on the end of last week. The cooling units were concealed behind a false wall in the apartment, located in the Innsbruck area.
A pair of males, a Austrian man, 55 and his 53-year-old brother, were detained in June. The elder brother, a colleague of the Syrian woman, told police last week that there had been an unfortunate event—but rejected murder.
Informing reporters recently, a representative for the public prosecutor's office said the brothers were being detained on "strong suspicion of homicide".
The names of those implicated have not been disclosed by authorities, in accordance with national regulations.
Their going missing was first reported by the female victim's relative, who resides in Germany, on July 25, 2024.
Investigators stated the 55-year-old suspect told them at the time she had gone on an long journey with her daughter to see her family in the nation of Turkey.
The victim's bank card was then discovered to be utilized abroad on multiple occasions.
But when police entered the victim's residence, her mobile phone was located.
An individual also reported listening to a loud noise in the dwelling, and shouts of "mum" on the day the two were believed to have vanished.
A broader official inquiry was launched, with authorities discovering various messages sent from the victim's mobile—including a job termination message to her company and communications to the 55-year-old suspect.
Officials said a four-figure sum was also sent to the individual.
The head of the State Criminal Police Office told media representatives on recently that a storage facility had been secured before the mother and child went missing and a freezing appliance had been positioned inside.
The male siblings extracted the freezer from the storage space on the very day the mother and daughter went missing, she said. And a shortly afterward, they purchased another freezer.
Officials state they consider this indicates the fatalities were premeditated.
"The reason for their demise was not identifiable due to the advanced decay of the victims," Tersch stated.
A legal representative—from the legal authorities—stated the exact sequence of events is yet to be determined, but the bodies were carefully placed and were not found during a earlier inspection.
Although the men were detained in the summer, it was not until the 12th of November that the suspect admitted to an occurrence and to hiding the bodies. He disputes any plan to cause death, investigators said.
In a related development, his younger brother acknowledged a cover-up but rejected knowledge of a killing.
The two suspects are currently in detention before court proceedings in detention centers in separate locations, approximately 189 kilometers away from each other.
Through a combined announcement, the nation's official for women's affairs and Justice Minister declared the "reported homicide of mother and child... represents the swift and cruel conclusion of a mother and child and uncovers a brutal scheme".
"Female individuals are being murdered due to the mere fact that they are of the female gender," they added.
"Femicides are a profoundly embedded and widespread concern that we must fight resolutely."
