A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a nation grappling with rampant crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the downtown area on the afternoon of Tuesday.
Police said the 40-year-old entertainer was accosted by a trio of assailants, with one began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.
The motive behind the attack is unknown and no arrests have been made, as per the official statement.
Authorities revealed that Stock was attacked as he was exiting a premises near the Carlton Centre.
He had devoted time at the property overseeing the setup of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by squatters, according to reports.
"It is alleged the deceased was approached by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before running from the location on foot," authorities stated.
CCTV footage showed a suspect with dreadlocked hair and wearing what appeared to be a protective services outfit opening fire on Stock before running away.
The DJ attempted to flee after he was hit but fell down across the street.
Officials noted that Stock had an gun that was not fired and nothing was taken during the attack.
Key evidence, like spent shells, were recovered from the crime scene.
Authorities have requested members of the public who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.
"Evidence suggests they traveled on foot after the shooting, and investigators have been attempting to locate them to establish their destination," added an official.
His sister, Nicole Stock, said the relatives are devastated to process his death.
"Words fail me. I cannot express the pain," she stated.
"We know he was a champion for numerous individuals. He was a fearless commentator about topics not many people were prepared to discuss. This is a profound tragedy."
She requested the community to avoid sharing disturbing footage from the scene, noting this was an extremely painful time, above all for Stock's young family.
Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that was broadcast on a South African TV network.
Beyond his role as a presenter, Stock was active in various commercial activities, including protective services, offering elite guarding services and managing safety for prestigious gatherings across South Africa.
He was also understood to participate in property management and participated in tenant removals.

A senior figure said he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's killing.
"He was forthright fearlessly and impartially. He even criticized me and my decisions as a minister. He was a shining model of who we should be," the minister added.
