New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that reassures me, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police released surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “In fact, he attends every game. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
