Mary Earps Explains Her Book Was Never Intended to Tear Anyone Down

Keeper Mary Earps has publicly stated that her freshly launched memoir was not designed to “tear anyone down” and shared worry that media response has been “misrepresented.”

Debated Statements and Fan Backlash

The former England player, who was instrumental in the Euro 2022 victory, received criticism from fans and Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor after commenting about ex-colleague Hannah Hampton and head coach Sarina Wiegman.

In her memoir, Earps allegedly stated told Wiegman she was “supporting poor attitude” by reinstating Hampton to the England squad after omitting her for being “problematic and undependable.”

“I’ve found it quite intense to see how parts were misrepresented,” Earps shared in an interview.

Clarifying Her Purpose

Earps strongly emphasized that the autobiography was not designed to damage anyone.

  • “I’ve not written this book to tear anyone down in any way whatsoever.”
  • “That is not who I am as a human being.”
  • “This is real life. It has implications. It is not entertainment.”

She also remarked about how women’s football has moved into an area that has become “almost like performance,” where private matters are scrutinized heavily for people’s enjoyment.

Dynamic with the Manager

Earps mentioned losing her spot as the starting goalkeeper before the European Championship and how that affected their dynamic with Wiegman.

She stated it was “not a rapid decline” in their relationship—just a divergence in opinions—and she continues to admire the coach.

“There were things that happened in the summer that I hoped had unfolded otherwise,” Earps added.

Individual Difficulties

In the autobiography, Earps shared details of the harassment she endured at in her younger years, describing it as a “really hard” section to go back to because it revived past pain.

  • “I failed to defend myself in those days.”
  • “I always believed that people disapproved of me for the majority of my years.”
  • “I became accustomed to feel like nobody really cares.”

These emotions led to panic attacks, and Earps shared she had issues with physical appearance and resorted to drinking during the lockdown period to manage emotional difficulties.

Relationships and Goals

Earps recently shared that she is in a partnership with Kitty and expressed pride about her partnership.

She also discussed her hopes for motherhood and revealed she has undergone egg freezing for later fertility treatment.

“I deeply desire to be a parent and have a family of my own,” Earps stated. “I enjoy my football career, but I wish to have a child at a later stage.”

Earps characterized the medical treatment as “overwhelming and personal” and advocated for more investigation tailored to players undergoing similar procedures.

In her statements, Earps emphasized that she has no regrets about her professional journey or personal choices, stressing that she always behaved honestly.
