In excess of 2,000 Trafficked Young People and Unaccompanied Minor Asylum Seekers Missing from British Local Authorities’ Custody

Per freedom of information figures, more than 2,000 minors who were either victimized or arrived in the UK unaccompanied to apply for protection vanished from protective services in the previous year.

Study Discloses Disturbing Statistics

A report titled “Until the Danger Ceases” filed information requests to child welfare offices across the United Kingdom.

Figures from one hundred thirty-five local authorities revealed that out of two thousand three hundred thirty-five children identified as having been victimized or suspected of having been trafficked, eight hundred sixty-four (thirty-seven percent) were reported missing.

A total of 141 government bodies responded to queries about unaccompanied minor refugees in their care, who totaled 11,999 minors. Of these, 1,501 (thirteen percent) were recorded as vanished.

Serious Threat for At-Risk Minors

The analysis, published by non-profit organizations, warns that these categories are at “serious threat” of disappearing from care.

Some exploited minors in the UK are UK nationals while the remainder are from overseas.

They may have faced either sexual exploitation or criminal exploitation, for example by organized crime groups.

Institutional Deficiencies in Safeguarding

Government bodies have a statutory duty to safeguard and support trafficked and unaccompanied children under minor welfare structures. Nevertheless, there is no publicly available national authorities data on the issue.

The new report warns that considerations such as insecure immigration status can increase young people’s exposure to further harm, placing them at substantial danger of re-victimization and further abuse.

Appeals for Action

The report states there is a “ongoing and major shortcoming” in safeguarding and urges local authorities and police to guarantee compliance with good practice.

The researchers also advise the Department for Education to ensure all victimized and solo young people can obtain proper lodging that prevents being exploited again.

Lodging Concerns

Starting in late 2021, municipal councils have been required to make certain that all children in care under 16 are located in settings that provide care.

Nevertheless, youths in their late teens can still be accommodated in so-called “supervised lodging” that does not provide day-to-day care.

In exceptional circumstances, these older children can be assigned to hostels, trailers, temporary shelters, boats, or communal living with unrelated adults.

Authorities Reply

An official representative stated: “Our leadership assumed a minor protection structure unable to satisfy the needs of the country’s most vulnerable children.

“Our significant children’s wellbeing and schools bill is the largest reform of minor protection in a long time, implementing our objective to sever the connection between young people’s origins and their subsequent accomplishments.”

The spokesperson added that the actions include bettering the supply of protective housing, better information sharing, obligating the creation of collaborative minor protection units in every area, and introducing a new obligation on collaborators to systematically involve education and childcare settings in their safeguarding arrangements to help prevent children slipping through the net.
