U.S. thespian and writer Jeremy O Harris, best known for the Tony-nominated production Slave Play, was taken into custody in November at an airport in Japan on allegations involving trying to bring in illegal drugs into the country, authorities announced.
Harris, 36, was stopped on 16 November at Naha airport, situated in Okinawa, after a customs officer found 0.78 grams of a crystalline substance laced with the synthetic narcotic MDMA in his tote bag, according to a official statement.
He was immediately arrested on suspicion of violating Japan’s stringent Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.
Local customs officials filed a criminal accusation with the public prosecutor to commence legal action against the individual.
A police official in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, verified that Harris remains in custody. The official did not elaborate on whether Harris has acknowledged the charges.
Presently, it is not known whether the figure has secured legal representation in Japan. Inquiries to his management team were not answered at once.
Authorities stated Harris had traveled to Okinawa for tourism, journeying from Britain via a connecting flight in Taiwan. Okinawa is a popular resort destination to the southwest of Tokyo, famous for its coastlines and U.S. bases.
Japan maintains some of the most severe narcotics regulations among industrialized countries. Having or trafficking even small amounts of illegal substances typically leads to legal proceedings.
International visitors arrested in Japan for alleged drug offences in recent years include ex- Australian rugby league player Blake Ferguson in 2021. In a famous 1980 case, former Beatle Paul McCartney was detained after landing in Tokyo with marijuana and was subsequently barred from the country for a period of time.
Beyond his stage writing, Jeremy O Harris is also known for his performance in the series Emily in Paris and for serving as a producer on the HBO drama Euphoria.
