Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the pastel suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
His passing follows shortly after he unveiled his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
The fashion world laments the passing to a true visionary whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
