Afghan Rulers Used Left-Behind UK Technology to Find Local Nationals Who Worked Alongside Western Forces, Investigation Learns

An informant has told an official investigation that the UK abandoned sensitive devices allowing the Taliban to track down local individuals who worked with international military.

Information Leak Puts Numerous in Danger

The whistleblower, identified as Person A, explained that individuals impacted by the security lapse were told to move homes and alter their contact details to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.

Members of Parliament are looking into official handling of a serious breach of private information affecting almost nineteen thousand individuals who had applied to come to the UK to flee the Taliban.

How the Leak Occurred

A spreadsheet containing their personal data, comprising identities, phone numbers and in some cases relative details, was inadvertently disclosed by a worker stationed at UK special forces headquarters in February 2022.

The incident came to light in late 2023, when details of several individuals who had sought to move to Britain surfaced on online platforms.

Preliminary research provided to the committee indicated that approximately fifty family members and co-workers of Afghans affected by the incident had been killed.

A gag order about the breach was enacted in last year and prevented relevant facts regarding the matter from media reporting until recently.

Safety Measures

Given injunction limitations, Person A and the non-governmental organization associated with told affected households they were working with that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been intercepted”.

“We advised that they change residence where feasible and changed their mobile numbers. Those were the primary information that, if the Taliban acquired this information, would result in them being traced,” she said.

Disputed Conclusions

The whistleblower argued that internal investigation performed by an ex-government employee had been wrong to conclude that the possession of the records by the Taliban was “unlikely to substantially change current risk levels”.

“The important fact is that these Afghans are in hiding from militant forces; they live secretly. Everything boils down to their previous employment.”

The source explained horrific abuse experienced by concerned people, including electrocution, waterboarding, and violent assaults.

“We have had four-year-old children who have had limbs fractured to pressure relatives to disclose hiding places,” Person A stated.
