Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
