Unprecedented encounters of a remarkably clever cephalopod this past summer have prompted the naming of 2025 as the octopus's year in a yearly report of Britain’s seas.
A mild winter followed by an exceptionally warm spring catalyzed unprecedented numbers of *Octopus vulgaris* to settle along the southern coastline of England, from Penzance in Cornwall to south Devon.
“The volume of octopuses caught was of the order of about thirteen times what we would normally expect in this region,” explained a marine life specialist. “Based on the totals, around 233 thousand octopuses were present in British seas this year – representing a massive jump from historical averages.”
*Octopus vulgaris* is found in British seas but ordinarily in such small numbers it is rarely seen. A sudden increase is caused by the dual effect of a mild winter and favorable spring temperatures. These ideal conditions meant increased juvenile survival, potentially supported by large numbers of spider crabs seen in the area.
The last time, such an octopus proliferation this significant was documented in 1950, with historical records indicating the one before that happened in 1900.
The remarkable abundance of octopuses meant they could be easily spotted in shallow waters for the first time in living memory. Video footage show octopuses gathering in groups – unlike their typical solitary behavior – and “walking” along the bottom on the tips of their limbs. One creature was even filmed grabbing an underwater camera.
“On my initial dive there this year I saw five octopuses,” they noted. “They are sizeable. There are two types in UK waters. One species is quite small, the size of a ball, but the *Octopus vulgaris* can be reaching impressive sizes.”
If conditions remain mild this coming winter suggests the potential a repeat event next year, because in the past, under these conditions, events have occurred consecutively for two years in a row.
“But, it's improbable, based on past events, that it will become a permanent fixture,” they stated. “The ocean is full of surprises at the moment so it’s a very uncertain scenario.”
The assessment also highlighted additional positive marine news around the UK coastline, including:
Not everything was good news, however. “The period was framed by marine incidents,” noted a conservation leader. “A major tanker collision in the North Sea and a spill of tonnes of plastic biobeads off the southern coast were serious issues. Dedicated individuals are making huge efforts to defend and heal our marine habitats.”
